Mending pottery with natural materials
Kintsugiberlin is a studio for you and your ceramic piece.
I love ceramics, and I want to repair your favourite piece of art in a sustainable way.
I offer repair service and regular workshops.
What is Kintsugi?
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, „golden joining“) is the traditional Japanese handcraft of repairing broken pottery with Urushi (漆) and powdered gold. The idea of Kintsugi is visualizing mends as uniqueness, rather than the absence or missing parts.
What is Urushi?
Urushi is a natural resin extracted from the East Asian Urushi tree (lacquer tree).
The resin is tapped by hand by an experienced Urushi tapper (漆掻き). Only about 200 ml of urushi resin can be obtained from one tree.
Tapping causes the tree to die, but new shoots soon form at the root.
About kintsugiberlin
As the founder of the studio, Satoko began practicing Kintsugi during her conservation studies in southern Germany and has been practicing it for several years. Her Kintsugi method is based on Japanese tradition, but has been adapted for everyday repair. She has been running her house-studio in Berlin since 2020.
Workshop
Kintsugi Workshop with Japanese Urushi
Saturday, 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM (150 min., including a 15-minute break)
Price: €180, including all material and tool costs on site
Place: Donaustr. 79, Berlin-Neukölln
Dates 2026:
Q3: July 18 (Sat)
Q4: December 5 (Sat)
Both dates are already fully booked.
The waiting list for both sessions is now open. Please fill in the form below. As soon as a spot becomes available, you will receive an email from me.
In this workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of the Kintsugi method using traditional Urushi resin from high-quality Japanese Urushi trees, along with real silver powder or imitation gold powder. The workshop is divided into two parts, with a 15-minute break in between.
Part One – Urushi Repair (90 minutes, 10:00–11:30 AM):
You will learn about the history and materials of Kintsugi and practice a basic repair method with Urushi, including joining pieces, filling gaps, and closing cracks.
Part Two – Urushi Gilding (45 minutes, 11:45 AM–12:30 PM):
You will deepen your knowledge and learn the technique of Urushi gilding using real silver powder.
Due to the curing time of the natural resin, it is not possible to repair your own ceramic piece in a single day. We work primarily with practice material. Of course, you are welcome to bring your own piece and start with the first step immediately (one piece per person; suitable materials are stoneware and earthenware, please no porcelain).
During the workshop, I will also provide information about ordering materials to support the Japanese Urushi craft.
The workshop is limited to a maximum of 6 participants (minimum 2) to ensure individual guidance.
The workshop is open to participants aged 18 and above. To avoid allergic reactions to Urushi (Urushiol), we advise that people with atopic dermatitis or other allergies refrain from working with Urushi. After polymerization, the Urushi-coated Kintsugi object is completely non-toxic and food-safe.
The workshop language is German, but support in English or Japanese can be provided if needed.
After online booking, you will receive an invoice within 72 hours. Please transfer the workshop fee within 14 days. If payment is not received on time, the spot will be automatically canceled and offered to other interested participants.
Cancellation Policy:
- Up to 72 hours before the workshop: No cancellation fees.
- Between 72 and 24 hours before the workshop: 20% of the course fee.
- Less than 24 hours before the workshop: 50% of the course fee.
- No-show without prior cancellation: Full course fee charged.
Please cancel in time so that your spot can be made available to other interested participants.
